Existing products are constantly changing and new ones are being added. This is the familiar cycle of product feeds. If you’ve already done a major translation in MERGADO Translate, you know that these changes and new products come at a cost.
In this article, we’ll look at how to save money on new and modified existing products using your DeepL Free API account.
What is DeepL Free API
The DeepL Free API is a free account from DeepL that provides the ability to translate 500,000 characters per month for free via the API. That many characters probably won’t be enough for your initial translation, but it should be enough for modified and newly added products to your feed (this depends on how many changes and new products you add per month).
How to create a DeepL Free API account
- Go to this page
- Click on “Sign up for free”
- After clicking, the page will scroll you down a bit to the plan selection, here select DeepL API Free

- You will now be redirected to the registration page. Fill out the registration form consisting of 3 steps (you can see the first one in the picture). Don’t be alarmed, DeepL will ask for your credit card for identification.

Go to the Overview page and scroll down until you hit this block:

Using the free API key
If you have already created a DeepL Free API account as well as a new connection with this key, go to the application to the Rules page, click edit, change the connection and save the rule.
Don’t forget that changing your connection will also change your selected languages, so dial them back to the original state!
Finally, just scroll down and click the Save button and you’re done.
